Neapolitan Ice Cream: What Is It?

A traditional frozen treat, Neapolitan ice cream consists of three distinct flavours, usually strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla, piled inside one container.

The dessert’s alleged roots in Naples, Italy, gave rise to its name. Spuncelli, a pistachio, cherry, and chocolate ice cream combination, is said to have been the first Neapolitan-style ice cream that immigrants from this area manufactured when they arrived in the US.

The Italian flag’s colours, green, white, and red, were represented by several flavour variations, but today’s traditional flavours are chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

Which cocoa powder is ideal for making ice cream?

In this recipe, Dutch-processed is fantastic, but natural or Dutch-processed will also work well.

Tips for Neapolitan Ice Cream

  • It’s crucial to work fast and place the churned result in the freezer as soon as you can while preparing homemade ice cream. Use metal bowls that have been chilled in the freezer for a few minutes before combining the cocoa powder and strawberry ice cream topping.
  • This will allow the churned ice cream to maintain its coldness throughout the brief mixing period. Next, quickly construct the layers, cover them, and put them into the freezer to solidify.
  • Use strawberry topping, not syrup, please. Strawberry jam can be used in place of strawberry topping if you can’t find any. The jam will give your strawberry ice cream additional texture, but you can prevent huge bits of fruit from getting into the ice cream by roughly chopping it before adding it to the vanilla ice cream.
  • The churning time varies based on the type of maker and might take anywhere from 20 to 1 hour. For exact times, see the handbook that came with your ice cream maker.
Neapolitan Ice Cream

Ingredients

  • Half a cup of whole milk
  • 1/4 cup of sugar, granulated
  • Three cups of heavy cream
  • One and a half teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chocolate powder, unsweetened
  • One cup of Smuckers strawberry ice cream topping
  • One teaspoon of food colouring, if desired

How to Take It

1. Assemble the components.

2. Mix the sugar and milk in a medium-sized bowl. Until the sugar dissolves, whisk.

3. Mix in the vanilla extract and heavy cream.

4. Churn for 20 to 25 minutes, or as directed by the maker.

5. Transfer one-third of the churned vanilla ice cream into a freezer-safe, airtight container. Transfer to the freezer, cover, and spread into an equal layer.

6. Half of the churned ice cream should be spooned into a big bowl. Put the chocolate powder in. Mix everything.

7. Evenly distribute the chocolate layer over the vanilla layer using a spoon. Go back to the freezer.

8. Pour the leftover whipped cream into a big bowl using a spoon. Top with the strawberry ice cream. Mix everything. Use a few drops of red food colouring to achieve a richer pink colour.

9. Evenly cover the chocolate layer with the strawberry layer.

10. To firm, cover and freeze for at least two hours. Next, scoop and savour!
